Gertrude – Hospice

Grandma Gertie came to us last year in pretty bad shape. She was underweight with excessive hair loss, a mouth full of rotten teeth, blind from advanced cataracts and un-spayed with a mammary tumor. It took several months and a lot of TLC before she was ready for the first of many surgeries. She has been spayed, had the tumor removed, all her rotten teeth pulled and the remaining few cleaned, one of her eyes removed and the cataract removed in the other. Gertie was able to see for the first time in a very long time. Unfortunately, she developed a severe infection in her eye a month later and lost most of her vision. She has been such a trooper through all of this. All Gertie wants is to love and be loved. She is a senior girl who takes a lot of naps, enjoys peace and quiet and a soft lap to cuddle on or next to. Once she knows you and feels safe and secure she will always be with you. She is completely house trained and free roam in the house. Gertie gets super excited around feeding time and every time you come home she will show you her “Happy Dance”. She is a quiet, loving, well behaved senior girl looking for a quiet, loving home to share her retired years in.
What does hospice mean? Gertie is a senior lady up there in age. Like all of us once we hit those golden years, she has some medical problems that are maintained with medications and some supplements we give her to help increase her mobility. We have done a lot of medical testing/diagnostics on Gertie and while the medications are doing great with her day to day, we know she has a tumor on her liver and while there have been no definitive findings – the vet is concerned she has cancer. Our goal with Gertie (and every other K9JL dog) is to provide high quality care and lots of love. We do not feel it is in her best interest going down more intensive surgeries and more medications. We never know how long dogs have with us, but we feel she has a great quality of life right now and should a special family be willing to adopt her (and love her like we do) we would be thrilled for her.
