Astrid

Hi! My rescue name is Astrid, but my foster mom calls me Mandi. I am a 10-year-old beautiful senior girl that has had a rough life, but not anymore! I arrived in the rescue in late March 2018 and made it to my foster mom’s on April 14. I was in very bad shape when I arrived- frail, underweight, skin in bad shape, severely infected ears, loss of hair, loss of muscle, shy, scared, and no self-confidence. I had surgery on August 17 to remove a tumor (thankfully, benign) and a few front teeth. I am up to date on all vaccinations, am heartworm negative, and spayed. I don’t get on furniture unless invited, I have no problems with baths, I enjoy a sweater on chilly days and lift one leg at a time to get dressed with ease, am a Velcro girl, am good with other dogs, and good with older children (must be well behaved). Also, I walk great on a lead, love the doggie door, and have lots of life left in me. I’ve started to find my voice and will bark at the door and ‘welcome’ visitors. Sometimes I talk to my playmates too. As is expected from my rough start in life, I am not a fan of sharing my food so I need my own eating area (meals, not treats), nothing fancy, my foster mom feeds us in different areas of the kitchen. I am a great pup and a pleasure to be around. I had a DNA test done and it came back that I am a combo of three awesome breeds: Greyhound, Newfoundland, and Border Collie. I am now a healthy 60 lbs with good muscle tone! My skin is now healed and soft but only some of my hair grew back, some people think I look like one of those cool hairless breeds. I still take medication for my ears and skin allergy. I have lost most of my hearing, so I will need to be kept on a lead when out because I won’t be able to hear you call me back. I love going on walks and car rides. I like the beach. I will protect you from the vacuum cleaner and water hose. I used to get nervous when alone, but if you have a doggy playmate for me or leave the curtains open so I can look out it helps. I cannot be put behind a closed door or in a kennel. My foster mom uses a tall baby gate about six feet from the front door and I sleep there waiting for her return. I have the run of the house all day long and night. I have never had an accident in the house and I have never damaged anything. My foster sister-pup taught me how to play. My favorite toys are tennis balls and rope toys for tug-a-war; I do not care for plastic toys. My foster mom has been working with me on accepting affection – I’m starting to like hugs and kisses. I am an INSIDE dog only. I do not have enough fur on my body to protect my dark skin from the sun or regulate my body temperature. I take my walks in the morning and later in the day. I go out to potty during the day and right back in the house, I get hot too quickly. I know that I have a lot going on in my life and I truly hope that you can look past it and help me have a better second half! I’m a little shy at first but once I get to know you, you will see what an awesome personality I have. My ideal forever home would be with someone who can meet the criteria above and just give me a great place to explore and play with people who love me! Thanks for looking!
